Chapter Fourteen

TIME MARCHES ON

“It’s not true, is it?” Sophie says as she barrels into my room.

“Knock much, Soph?” I set my Chromebook on the bed next to me. I’ve been putting the finishing touches on my parts of Elle and my online newspaper for social studies. We have to present it to the class tomorrow and then turn it in.

“Sorry, I had to find out. Are you really a cheerleader?” Sophie throws herself next to me on my bed and waits for an answer. “Like, short skirt wearing, jumping up and down and doing kicks in the air, cheerleader?”

Oh. I hadn’t even thought about the uniform yet. I hope it’s stylish. I look at my sister. “Yes.”

“Wow! I thought for sure that Mom was pranking me. You won’t even kick the soccer ball around or go jogging with Mom and me. How did you make cheerleading?”

I cross my arms and fix my gaze on her. “I just did, that’s how. Geez.” I’m starting to feel annoyed with her reaction.

“I’m just surprised, is all,” Sophie explains. “It’s so not … you.”

“Well, maybe it’s me now, okay?” I roll my eyes.

Sophie puts her hands up in surrender. “Okay, okay. You’re a cheerleader. It’s the new you. Good job. Did you hear I made the under-eleven indoor travel soccer team?”

I feel my anger lessen, and I smile at my sister. “No, I didn’t hear. Congrats, Sophie, that’s great.” I know this is a big deal for her and something that she really wanted. I always knew she’d make the team, though. She’s a great offensive player and scores tons of goals.

“So, we both made teams today. Seems to me like we should get ice cream for dessert. I’m going to go bug Mom and see if we’ve got any.”

“Okay,” I say and watch her leave. Ice cream twice in one day seems like a good day. I feel my phone buzzing with texts coming in and pick it up and read. The girls are texting back and forth quickly; everyone is still excited about making cheerleading today and talking about what to expect. Lola wants to know if we’ll all have to wear our hair the same way. Gianna wants to know when we’ll get our uniforms and what they look like. Vanessa thinks we should make color-coordinated bows. Shriya wants to know if we’ll wear our uniforms to school on game days like the football cheerleaders did in the fall. I try to jump into the conversation but it’s hard because it’s moving so fast. I type a quick This is going to be the most fun ever! and then decide to switch and group text with my friends back home and tell them the news.

Taylor: Hey guys, I miss you!

Julie: Hi Taylor!!!!!!!!

Anusha: Hey girl!

Nora: Miss U 2!

Julie: How’s school?

Taylor: Big news… you’re not going to believe…

Anusha: ???

Taylor: I MADE THE CHEERLEADING SQUAD!!

Julie: What?

Anusha: For real?!

Nora: Was it no-cut?

Taylor: Seriously, Nora? No, it wasn’t no-cut. There were cuts. Just not me. I
